๐Ÿ”ข What is a numeral system

A numeral system is a way to write numbers. The same value can look different: 200 in decimal is 11001000 in binary, 310 in octal and C8 in hexadecimal.

The base shows how many distinct digits are used. Decimal uses 0โ€“9; hexadecimal uses 0โ€“9 and Aโ€“F.

๐Ÿ“š Main systems

Decimal (10)

Everyday system. Digits 0โ€“9.

Binary (2)

Used in computing. Digits 0 and 1.

Octal (8)

Used in digital electronics. Digits 0โ€“7.

Hexadecimal (16)

Web colours (#FF0000), memory addresses. Digits 0โ€“9 and Aโ€“F.

โœ๏ธ How to convert

To decimal

Multiply each digit by the base raised to its place power and sum. Example: 5678 = 5ร—8ยฒ + 6ร—8ยน + 7ร—8โฐ = 37510.

From decimal

Divide repeatedly by the new base and write remainders in reverse. Example: 37510 โ†’ 5678.

Between arbitrary bases

Convert to decimal first, then to the target โ€” the converter shows both steps.

๐Ÿ’ก Examples

5678: division by 8 yields remainders 7, 6, 5
  • 110010002 โ†’ C816: via decimal: 20010
