Solution
🔢 What is LCM
The least common multiple (LCM) is the smallest integer divisible by each of the given numbers without a remainder.
For example, LCM(9, 12) = 36, because 36 is the smallest number multiple of both 9 and 12.
✏️ Ways to find the LCM
Listing multiples
List multiples of each number and find the first common one. Only for small numbers.
Prime factorization
Factor the numbers, take the highest power of each prime and multiply.
Via GCD
For two numbers: LCM(a, b) = |a × b| / GCD(a, b). Example: LCM(16, 24) = 384 / 8 = 48.
💡 Examples
- LCM(9, 12): multiples of 9: 9, 18, 27, 36…; of 12: 12, 24, 36… → LCM = 36
- Factorization: 9 = 3², 12 = 2² × 3 → LCM = 2² × 3² = 36
- Via GCD: LCM(16, 24) = 16 × 24 / 8 = 48
