📐 Basic exponent rules
Product of powers: am · an = am+n · 2³ · 2⁴ = 2⁷
Quotient of powers: am : an = am−n, a ≠ 0 · 5⁶ : 5² = 5⁴
Power of a power: (am)n = am·n · (3²)⁴ = 3⁸
Zero exponent: a⁰ = 1, a ≠ 0
Negative exponent: a−n = 1 / an, a ≠ 0 · 2⁻³ = 1/8
Zero to a power: 0n = 0 when n > 0; 0⁰ = 1

❓ FAQ
Can a negative number be raised to a fractional power?
If the denominator is even, the result is complex (e.g. (−4)0.5). With an odd denominator the result may be real: (−8)1/3 = −2.
What does a negative exponent mean?
A negative exponent means the reciprocal raised to a positive power: a−n = 1/an. Zero cannot be raised to a negative power.
