πŸ›’ Why compare unit prices

Shelves often show packs of different sizes β€” 900 g instead of 1 kg, 750 ml instead of a liter. Comparing shelf prices alone is misleading: the better deal is the one with the lower cost per the same unit of weight or volume.

The calculator converts both products to a common basis β€” β€œper 1000 units” β€” and shows which is cheaper and by how many percent.

πŸ“ Formula

Price per 1000 units (g, ml, kg, or l β€” both products must use the same units):

Price per 1000 units = Price / Weight (or volume) Γ— 1000

The lower value wins.

πŸ’‘ Example

Product A: 150 for 900 g β†’ 150 / 900 Γ— 1000 = 166.67 per 1 kg

Product B: 160 for 1,000 g β†’ 160 / 1000 Γ— 1000 = 160 per 1 kg

Product B is about 4% cheaper per unit of weight, even though its shelf price is higher.

βœ… Tips

  • Enter weight or volume in the same units for both products β€” grams with grams, liters with liters.
  • Use the net amount on the pack, not the outer package size including packaging.
  • A larger pack is not always cheaper β€” recalculate before buying, especially during sales.
  • The calculator works well on a phone while you shop.
