File Size Converter

Quick conversion between any digital storage units

❓ How the converter works

The converter translates digital data volume between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes. All values are first converted to bytes, then to the selected unit. Equivalents in other units are shown as well.

Uses the binary system based on 1024 — the same as Windows and Linux when displaying file sizes.

💾 Unit relationships (in bytes)

Basic

1 KB = 1024 B

1 MB = 1,048,576 B

Large

1 GB = 1,073,741,824 B

1 TB = 1,099,511,627,776 B

💡 Calculation example

Convert 1024 KB to megabytes:

  • To bytes: 1024 × 1024 = 1,048,576 B
  • To MB: 1,048,576 ÷ 1,048,576 = 1 MB

✅ Tips

  • Hard drive packaging often lists decimal GB (1000³) — the reported capacity will be slightly less in the OS.
  • 1 MB is enough for ~500 pages of text; 1 GB holds hundreds of photos or a short video.
  • The “Also equals” block shows the result in all units without re-entering values.
  • ISPs quote speed in bits (Mb/s) while files use bytes (MB) — do not confuse the labels.
